Massive Traffic Jam on Khopoli-Bor Ghat Stretch Due to Weekend Rush
Summarise This Article With

In a surprising turn of events a massive traffic jam occurred on the Khopoli-Bor Ghat section on Saturday, December 13 due to a heavy rush of vehicles heading towards Pune. The congestion caused significant delays for commuters. Traffic movement was severely affected on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway with vehicles crawling for several kilometers.

Authorities reported heavy congestion on the Bor Ghat stretch between Khopoli and Khandala. Long queues of vehicles were observed from the Shingroba Temple area to the Dashturi traffic check post. Traffic came to a near standstill at key bottlenecks such as the Amrutanjan Bridge and Battery Hill leaving motorists stranded for extended periods.

Traffic was also extremely slow from the Khandala Tunnel to the Khandala Overbridge. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace in this section. On the old Khandala-Lonavala road reports indicated that queues of vehicles stretched for approximately 7 to 8 kilometers further exacerbating the situation for commuters.

To manage the situation teams from the Raigad Traffic Police, Pune Rural Traffic Police and Highway Traffic Police were deployed to the scene. Authorities stated that the congestion was primarily due to the heavy weekend traffic with many people from Mumbai traveling towards Pune and surrounding hill stations. Traffic violations and a lack of lane discipline by some motorists also contributed to the gridlock.

Authorities said that the traffic situation was expected to improve gradually and urged commuters to be patient, follow traffic rules and cooperate with the authorities to help ease the congestion.

Kamraj Road Fully Reopens After Nearly 7 Years, Easing Traffic in Central Bengaluru

After a nearly seven-year closure Kamraj Road in central Bengaluru has finally reopened completely to traffic. This brings much-needed relief to commuters and businesses in the area after a long wait.

The road connects Cubbon Road and MG Road and had been closed since June 2019 due to underground metro construction.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officially announced the reopening on January 2 2026. One side of the road had been partially opened in June 2024. This week the remaining carriageway was opened restoring full traffic flow in both directions.

Kamraj Road was closed for the construction of the MG Road underground metro station on the Pink Line.

The prolonged closure forced commuters to take longer routes leading to frequent traffic congestion in surrounding areas such as Commercial Street Brigade Road, and Cubbon Park.

Local businesses also suffered due to reduced accessibility.

According to BMRCL the reconstructed road is approximately 214 meters long with a width of at least 11 meters on each side.

Officials stated that the upgraded design is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in one of Bengaluru’s busiest commercial zones.

The reopening is also expected to strengthen connectivity between key shopping and office hubs benefiting both commuters and businesses.

While the reopening of Kamraj Road has been welcomed the lengthy closure has reignited criticism regarding the pace and planning of urban infrastructure projects in the city. SJ and several other residents have questioned whether such a prolonged closure during the metro expansion could have been avoided.

However for now, the complete reopening of the road has brought significant relief to commuters who had been navigating through barricades and diversions for years and movement through Bengaluru’s central business district has become much easier.

A tragic accident occurred on the Delhi to Mumbai Expressway on Monday morning. Due to the season’s first dense fog several vehicles collided. At least four people were killed and several others injured in the incident. The accident reportedly occurred around 5:00 AM. Visibility was significantly reduced in the area due to the thick fog.

According to initial reports the accident took place near Raniyala Patakpur village. Approximately 20 to 25 vehicles, including trucks, cars and police vehicles were involved. Among the deceased were two police officers, including a CISF inspector and some civilians. Fifteen to twenty people were injured several of whom are in critical condition. They are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Police officials stated that the accident began when two overloaded dump trucks collided due to low visibility. Shortly after a truck carrying guavas rear-ended the already damaged vehicles. The situation worsened when the guava-laden truck overturned scattering the fruit across the expressway and making the road extremely slippery. The combination of fog short braking distances, and the slippery road triggered a chain reaction involving numerous vehicles.

Emergency response teams, including police, ambulances and rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene. The injured were immediately transported to hospitals. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination. The accident caused a complete traffic standstill on the expressway for several hours. The damaged vehicles were later removed and traffic was gradually restored.

Authorities also reported several other fog-related accidents in Haryana that same morning. In Faridabad two people died when an SUV collided with a stationary truck on the expressway. Separate accidents involving buses, trucks and tractors were also reported in Rewari, Hisar, and Ghaseda. However no fatalities were reported in those incidents.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while driving in foggy conditions maintain a safe distance, reduce speed, and use fog lights when necessary. Furthermore with winter fog expected to become denser in the coming weeks officials have warned that visibility-related accidents could increase if safety precautions are ignored.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by dense fog on high-speed corridors like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
