After the tragic stampede that took place at the MS Chinnaswamy Stadium, where RCB’s victory in IPL 2025 was being celebrated and in which 11 people died, the Karnataka government is planning to build a new 60,000-capacity stadium in Bangalore.

While it could not reduce the severity of the tragedy, the government is making improvements to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. The new stadium will reduce overcrowding and lead to better crowd management.

The exact location of the stadium has not been revealed yet, but sources say that the new stadium will come up at Dr. K. Shivarama Karanth Layout near Mavallipura, about eight kilometres from Yehlanka.

RCB Victory Tragedy

The new stadium is being built to celebrate the 516th birth anniversary of Bangalore founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

The deadly stampede that took place at the MS Chinnaswamy Stadium has created a huge uproar, and the authorities have been criticised for not taking enough measures to control the crowd around the stadium.

The MS Chinnaswamy Stadium is located right in the middle of Bangalore city and traffic and crowd control have always been a challenge here.

The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000, and on the day the stampede happened, more than three lakh people had gathered around the stadium.

Police presence was poor, and the resulting chaos led to the tragedy.

After the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah felt the need to decongest the heart of the city. This need is now being met by shifting the cricket stadium to a less crowded part of the city.

After the tragedy, the government suspended several officials, including the Bangalore Police Commissioner and the state intelligence chief.

Several infrastructure projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore have been announced to improve civic amenities in the city. The government has announced a 40-km-long tunnel road and a 118-km-long elevated corridor.

WATCH VIDEO: DK Metcalf Involved in Fan Altercation During Steelers vs Lions Game, NFL Review Likely
Summarise This Article With

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was involved in a tense moment with a fan during the first half of the Steelers’ Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Television footage shown by CBS appeared to show DK Metcalf reaching out and possibly striking a fan sitting near the front row of the stands.

The fan was leaning over the railing at the time of the incident and was wearing a blue wig.

The incident happened quickly and was witnessed by spectators standing nearby.

In the video clip, DK Metcalf is seen standing near the sidelines when his interaction with the fan escalated in just a few seconds.

While the exact reason is still unclear, the footage suggests that there was a brief verbal exchange between them before DK Metcalf made a physical gesture towards the fan.

No Immediate Penalty During the Game

Because the game officials did not notice the altercation, no penalties or ejections were issued immediately during the match.

DK Metcalf remained in the game and continued playing.

However, the lack of action during the game does not mean the matter is closed, as the incident occurred in front of broadcast cameras.

NFL Review and Possible Disciplinary Action

The National Football League is expected to review the footage.

NFL rules strictly prohibit players from punching or assaulting non-players. If witnessed by officials, contact with a fan on the field typically results in a personal foul and the player being ejected from the game.

Incidents involving fans in the stands can also fall under the league’s personal conduct policy, which allows the NFL to impose fines or suspensions after a review, regardless of whether a penalty was called for the action during the game.

While the reason for this conversation is still unclear, the league’s action will now depend on the NFL’s assessment of the video and any additional context gathered.

A fine or a short suspension is possible, although no official decision has been announced yet.

As the Steelers head toward the end of the regular season, this situation has added an unwanted off-field storyline ahead of their upcoming games.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has put an end to weeks of speculation confirming that IPL 2026 matches will not be shifted from Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

His assurance comes amidst concerns following a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s victory celebrations earlier this year which resulted in several fatalities and led to a temporary suspension of professional cricket activities at the stadium.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections Shivakumar stated that the government will ensure that IPL matches continue to be held in Bengaluru calling it a matter of state pride.

He emphasized that all necessary steps would be taken to strengthen security protocols improve crowd management and upgrade the stadium’s infrastructure.

“I am a cricket lover. I will not allow IPL matches to be shifted from Chinnaswamy. We will uphold the dignity of Karnataka and ensure the matches are held here,”

he said.

The stampede had led to a months-long suspension of cricket activities at the iconic stadium raising serious questions about preparedness and event management. This uncertainty had forced local tournaments to be relocated. Reports had also suggested that RCB might consider Pune as a temporary home ground for IPL 2026.

Shivakumar dismissed this possibility reiterating that future IPL matches would be held in Bengaluru. He also mentioned that the government is planning to build a larger alternative stadium in the long term.

Shivakumar also briefly commented on the KSCA elections, mentioning his long association with the cricketing fraternity and stating that he had voted for his preferred candidates.

Crucially he assured that the government would work closely with the KSCA to prevent a recurrence of the recent tragic incident. This ensures that the stadium’s reputation and safety standards are maintained.

Meanwhile IPL preparations are underway elsewhere. We would like to inform you that the 2026 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 16. RCB has released several foreign players, including Liam Livingstone and Lungi Ngidi while retaining left-arm fast bowler Yash Dayal.

This comes despite the team being embroiled in legal proceedings unrelated to cricket since their title win.
