Banks in Bengaluru and across Karnataka will remain open on Thursday, January 1, 2026, as New Year’s Day is not a gazetted holiday in the state. Customers can access all in-branch services, while digital banking options will continue uninterrupted.
While many states across India will observe a bank holiday to welcome the New Year it’s important to note that banks in Bengaluru and the rest of Karnataka will remain open for regular business on Thursday January 1, 2026.
According to the official list of holidays issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Karnataka state government New Year’s Day is not a gazetted holiday in the state.
Customers can avail all in-person services on this day including cash deposits and KYC updates. Furthermore digital banking channels such as NEFT RTGS and UPI will continue to operate without any interruption across the country.

Biocon Employee Commits Suicide by Jumping from Bengaluru Office Building
A 26-year-old Biocon Biologics employee died by suicide after jumping from the company’s Electronics City office in Bengaluru. Police have launched an investigation, stating that the reason behind the incident is still unknown and no suicide note was recovered.
Police have confirmed that a 26-year-old employee of Biocon Biologics Limited committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon by jumping from the company’s office building in Electronics City Bengaluru.
An investigation has been launched into the incident. Crucially authorities have not yet determined the reason behind this drastic step.
The deceased has been identified as S. Ananth Kumar a resident of Banashankari in South Bengaluru.
He reportedly worked in the finance department of Biocon Biologics and had joined the company approximately six months ago.
Police said the incident occurred around 5 pm at the company’s Electronics City Phase II campus on Hosur Road.
According to initial reports Kumar was seen talking on his mobile phone before heading to the cafeteria area on one of the upper floors of the building.
He then went to the rooftop and jumped. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
No suicide note was found at the scene.
Officials at the Parappana Agrahara police station have registered a case and stated that further investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.
Police have not ruled out any possibilities at this stage and are examining CCTV footage and speaking to colleagues and family members.
Biocon issued a brief statement expressing condolences to the employee’s family and stating that it is cooperating with the authorities.
The company added that since the matter is under investigation it would not comment further.
This incident comes amidst growing attention to employee mental health following a separate tragic case involving a newly married couple in Bengaluru that recently made national headlines. Police have reiterated the importance of seeking timely emotional support and urged those facing distress to reach out for help.
