Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line to See Increased Train Frequency, Sixth Trainset to Join Fleet on December 22
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Yellow Line is set to get a major upgrade as BMRCL prepares to deploy its sixth trainset on December 22. The new six-coach train will reduce peak-hour wait times from 15 to 12 minutes, easing congestion on the busy RV Road–Bommasandra corridor, especially for commuters traveling to Electronic City.
Bengaluru’s Yellow Line is set to receive a significant service upgrade this month. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing to induct its sixth trainset into passenger service on December 22nd.
This new six-coach train manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) near Kolkata under a subcontract with China’s CRRC Nanjing Puzhen, arrived in Bengaluru in the last week of November.
It is part of a larger supply of 36 trainsets worth Rs 1,578 crore aimed at strengthening operations across the metro network.
Before commencing operations the train must successfully complete a 750-km mainline endurance run and several signaling interface tests to ensure full compatibility with the system’s automation and safety protocols. BMRCL senior officials have confirmed that the corporation is aiming for a December 22 launch, just before Christmas to manage the increasing passenger demand.
Once operational this new addition will reduce peak-hour frequency on the Yellow Line, which runs between RV Road and Bommasandra, from the current 15 minutes to approximately 12 minutes.
Officials have also clarified that the metro will continue to begin operations at 6 AM; there are currently no plans to extend the opening hours. At least one train will also be kept as a traffic spare to handle emergencies or maintenance situations.
Significantly since the opening of the 19.15-kilometer Yellow Line corridor on August 11th Namma Metro has seen its daily ridership exceed one million passengers. Not only that but the main reason for this is the line’s connectivity to major employment hubs like Electronic City.
At the time of its launch the line was operating with three train sets but BMRCL gradually expanded the fleet. A fourth train was added in September, and subsequently more units were added to reduce the headway.
Despite these measures, commuters have frequently complained about long waiting times and overcrowding during peak hours. This has underscored the need for the rapid deployment of new train sets.
With the addition of the sixth train BMRCL hopes that operations on one of Bengaluru’s busiest metro corridors will become smoother and waiting times will be reduced.
The increased frequency is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters as the city enters the busy travel season towards the end of the year.
