‘Would You Choose Paycheck Over Self-Respect?’ r/Bangalore Reddit Post on Startup Life Goes Viral
A Reddit post about a toxic Bangalore startup has gone viral, revealing overwork, humiliation, and threats faced by employees. The anonymous poster quit after weeks of public shaming and impossible targets, sparking debate on startup culture and mental health in India’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Not everything that glitters is gold, and this is what an employee learned after joining a startup. A happy start soon turned into a nightmare, and the employee eventually had to say goodbye.
The employee poured his heart out in an anonymous post on the r/bangalore subreddit.
The poster detailed how the employee had to quit his job in just a few weeks and said that self-esteem should be given more importance than salary.
The post has once again sparked a major debate on startup work culture.
The title of the post read, “Bangalore-based startup with toxic work culture.” Nothing new.” and details how the initial excitement soon turned to agony.
It alleges that huge responsibilities were handed over without adequate training. Worse, the incumbent had to endure public shaming and taunting.
Often targets were set that were unachievable, and he was humiliated if he failed to achieve them.
The incumbent was asked to work even on Sundays and was threatened with a fine of Rs 1 lakh if he did not achieve the target.
Many times employees broke down and cried in toilets. Since all these activities were happening with the tacit approval of the founder, complaining was pointless.
The incumbent eventually backed down and resigned after another reprimand, but he suffered a major setback.
Within hours, access was withdrawn, and anyone contacting the company was threatened with legal action.
The post ended with a warning:
“Never stay in a place where respect is absent, no matter how good the role sounds on paper.”
The thread quickly drew both positive and negative responses, while some even added a tint of irony and dark humor.
One user stated,
“I want to join this company for funsies… may end up getting valuable content that entertains everyone.”
Another user stated,
“In the name of the startup, some companies are only contributing to mental illness.”
Another asked,
“Why is this becoming normal nowadays? The more you micromanage, the less efficient people become.”
The debate is based on both outrage and concern and highlights how stories of toxic workplaces resonate widely with young professionals working in India’s startup ecosystem.
