Bangalore to Experience Rare Zero Shadow Day on April 24 — When the Sun Erases All Shadows!

On April 24, Bengaluru will experience Zero Shadow Day, a rare phenomenon where the Sun is positioned directly overhead, causing vertical objects to cast no shadow. This event happens twice a year in the tropical regions of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

For the unversed, the tropical regions are those parts of the Earth between the Tropic of Cancer at 23.4°N latitude and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.4°S latitude.

On this day, the Sun rises exactly in the East and sets exactly in the West, and for a brief moment, all objects lose their shadows completely. Technically, on this day, the Sun’s declination—i.e., the angular distance of the Sun on the celestial sphere above or below the Equator—is equal to the latitude of the location.

The Sun’s rays will be perpendicular to any object on Earth, and no shadows will be formed for some time. Different parts of the world have Zero Shadow Days on different dates.

The Zero Shadow occurs for a brief period and usually happens around noon. At noon, the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. However, for the rest of the day, shadows will appear as usual because of the rotation of the Earth.

All students of Geography know that the Earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees on its imaginary axis. The seasons, like summer and winter, are also a result of this tilt. It is because of this tilt that cities in the Arctic Circle have long months of daylight and nights.

It is also because of the tilt that the Sun never travels in a straight line across the sky throughout the year. The Sun is directly overhead only in the tropics, and even then, this occurs only during specific months of the year when this unique phenomenon takes place.

‘Zero Shadow Day’ Important Facts

The phenomenon only happens in the regions between the Tropics and the Equator.

The phenomenon happens two times a year.

Cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Hyderabad have ‘Zero Shadow Day.’

The phenomenon of no shadows being formed by vertical objects happens only for a few moments around noon.

Road Rage or Attempted Murder? Viral Video Sparks Shocking Twist in Bangalore IAF Officer Assault Case

Published

After the arrest of a man in Bangalore for assaulting an IAF officer, a new twist has emerged in the case. Viral CCTV footage appears to show the IAF officer initiating the physical violence.
Earlier, police had arrested a man in connection with the assault of the 40-year-old officer.

According to reports, the officer was attacked and verbally abused by a group of Kannada-speaking individuals. He further alleged that the group pursued him on motorcycles before physically assaulting him, resulting in facial injury.

The victim was on his way to the airport and visited the police station to complain. The officers on duty asked the victim to get first aid and then lodge the FIR. However, the man left for the airport and later uploaded a video that showed him with a bleeding face, leading the police to investigate the case.

The police traced the victim’s address and learnt that he was an employee with the DRDO. The police contacted the wife of the victim, who was also an IAF officer working with the DRDO. The lady then lodged a complaint.

Indian Air Force officer Wing Commander Sheeladitya Bose claimed he was en route to the airport with his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta, on Monday when the incident occurred. Acting on Dutta’s complaint, the Byappanahalli Police have registered a case against an unidentified person.

According to the victim’s account, his wife accidentally hit a biker while opening the door. An altercation followed, which soon escalated into physical violence.

Later, Sheeladitya Bose posted a video on X which showed him with a bloodied face. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Devaraj D stated that there was no language angle involved and it was a plain case of road rage, and both attacked one another.

However, in another twist to the ongoing saga, a new video is making the rounds on social media, which shows the IAF officer initiating the scuffle. In the video, the IAF officer can be seen roughing up the accused and creating a ruckus in public.

This video gives credence to the police version that both parties were involved in the scuffle. In the video, the officer is seen involved in a verbal spat, while his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta, tries to stop him.

In the video, the officer is seen engaged in a heated verbal altercation, while his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta, attempts to defuse the situation. Following the viral circulation of CCTV footage, the Bangalore Police have now charged the IAF officer with attempted murder. Police Commissioner B Dayananda confirmed that both a case and a counter-case have been registered, and investigations into both matters are currently underway.

The accused, however, gave a completely different story of the incident and alleged that the lady had made a remark, and when the accused enquired about what she was saying, an argument followed, which was soon joined by her husband.

Antics of a Bangalore man sipping tea seated on a chair in the middle of a busy road landed him in trouble when the reel, which depicted the scene, went viral and caught the attention of the City Police.

The man was traced and arrested, and charged with endangering the lives of passersby on the road. The Police also took to their social media handle and warned the public not to repeat such antics in public places, or else they will be fined and even jailed.

The incident reportedly took place on a major arterial road in the city on April 12, though the precise location remains unclear. A viral video shows the man calmly sipping tea while seated on a chair right in the middle of a bustling road.

The man seemed to be unaffected by the vehicles which were passing by, which included an auto and two-wheelers.

The Bangalore City Police shared a montage of the viral video with a cryptic message as a warning to others:

“Taking tea time to the traffic line will cost you a hefty fine, not fame!!! BEWARE BCP is watching you,” Police posted on X, sharing a video montage of the stunt and the arrest.

Social Media Reacts

The video and the prompt action by the City Police against the offender have prompted sharp reactions from X users.

One user described the act as stupid and reckless and posted,

“What happens if someone hits him with a car, truck, auto or a bike? To die with tea??”

Another user was not satisfied with the man getting off with a fine and asked the police to give him some usual Police hospitality and posted,

“Fine is not enough. Give him some belt treatment,” wrote another, reflecting public anger at the stunt.

Many users were all praise for the prompt action taken by the police and stated that it will serve as a warning for others.

“Good initiative… this should instill fear of law.”

The City Police has once again asked the public to refrain from such reckless acts as it not only endangers the person’s life but is also a threat to others travelling on the road.

This is not the first time the City Police have taken action against erring content creators.

Earlier, the Police had taken into custody Bigg Boss Kannada contestants Vinay Gowda and Rajath Kishan when a video featuring the duo brandishing machetes became viral.

The Police had slapped charges under the Arms Act, 1959, of the Indian Penal Code.
