A deeply distressing story has emerged from Bengaluru sparking outrage across the country. At the heart of the matter is K. Sivakumar a retired Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) who alleges that he was forced to pay bribes at almost every step while dealing with matters related to the death of his only daughter.

Sivakumar’s emotional LinkedIn post which was later deleted, detailed the corruption and negligence he encountered from government officials ranging from police and ambulance staff to civic authorities and crematorium workers. His 34-year-old daughter Akshaya Sivakumar an alumna of IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad, died of a brain hemorrhage on September 18, 2025. She had been working in Bengaluru for 11 years including eight years at Goldman Sachs.

Sivakumar wrote, “My only daughter recently passed away at the age of 34. Ambulance, police for FIR and post-mortem report, crematorium for receipt, BBMP office for death certificate… bribes were openly demanded everywhere. I had the money, so I paid. What will poor people do?”

He alleged that an ambulance driver demanded Rs 3,000 to transport his daughter’s body. Furthermore, policemen at the Bellandur police station demanded cash for copies of the FIR and post-mortem report. He claimed that the bribe was taken from him openly inside the police station. He also wrote about being harassed by officials at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office, where he had to make multiple visits to obtain the death certificate, which he finally received only after paying more than the official fee.

Sivakumar’s post, a grieving father’s plea against systemic corruption, went viral, triggering widespread anger. Most importantly, following the uproar, Whitefield police took swift action, suspending Police Sub-Inspector Santosh Kumar and Constable Gorakhnath of the Bellandur police station.

The DCP (Whitefield) confirmed the suspensions and stated on X (formerly Twitter): “The police department will not tolerate any such misconduct or inappropriate behavior under any circumstances.” A departmental inquiry has also been initiated.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, responding to the controversy, said that Shivakumar should have filed a formal complaint instead of posting on social media. He simply stated, “He is a CFO. He should have complained to senior officers or the Lokayukta. Posting on social media is not right.”

These comments drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders. BJP state vice-president Malavika Avinash expressed her dismay and attacked the Congress government, calling it “administratively incompetent.”

Malavika Avinash demanded an explanation from Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, asking why a grieving father had to face such indifference and why his post was later deleted.

She said,

“It is shocking that in a city like Bengaluru, a man grieving the death of his daughter had to pay bribes at every stage. Even worse is that his post was deleted. Who forced him to remove it?”

This incident has reignited the debate on corruption in government departments and the lack of empathy towards citizens in distress. Many netizens have demanded reforms and accountability in the system, citing Shivakumar’s story as a reflection of the “harsh ground realities” faced by common people in India.
