Nationwide Strike With Over 25 Crore Workers Halting Work, Bangalore Citizens Brace For The Worst

A nationwide strike has been called by several trade unions across the political spectrum in protest against what they call the anti-labour policies of the Narendra Modi-led government in the centre.

While the nationwide strike is expected to affect transport and essential services like Banking, postal services and power, schools and educational institutions are expected to remain open.

Like in other major urban centres, Bangalore is also expected to be affected by the Bandh call.

The strike call has been given by a group of 10 trade unions across the country, and more than 25 crore workers across the country are expected to take part in it.

The bandh has also received support from the farmer groups and associations. The trade unions are protesting against what they call anti-labour, anti-farmer and pro-capitalist policies of the Centre government.

The Banking services are likely to be affected because several banking workers’ associations have also joined the strike.

Essential banking services like cheque clearance, account queries, and loan processing could be affected.

The Insurance sector is also expected to participate in the nationwide strike. The postal workers have also lent support to the strike.

Although neither BMTC nor KSRTC has given any notice of joining the strike and halting work, the public in the State is bracing to face potential delays and cancellations. The Coal and

Power sector, which includes more than 27 lakh electricity workers, has also joined the strike, but major outages are not expected, though routine outages are expected and their rectification could be delayed due to the shortage of staff.

Bangalore is an IT hub, and the sector is closely monitoring the situation, and it is possible that workers may opt to work from home if transport services are affected.

The primary point of dispute between the trade unions and the Central Government revolves around the four newly introduced labour codes, which the unions claim undermine collective bargaining power and accelerate the privatisation of public sector enterprises.

Additionally, the unions have criticised the Central Government for not responding to a 17-point charter of demands submitted the previous year.
