Decades-Long ISKCON Dispute Ends: SC Says Bangalore Temple Not Linked to Mumbai Society
The Supreme Court has settled a long-standing property dispute between ISKCON Society Bangalore and ISKCON Society Mumbai.
The case, which is almost two and a half decades old, was first heard by a trial court and then went to the High Court before being heard in the highest court of the land.
The Supreme Court ruled that the ISKCON Temple and its associated entities belonged to ISKCON Society Bangalore, registered under the Karnataka Societies Act, and ISKCON Society Mumbai has no role.
Presiding over the case, a bench composed of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih quashed an earlier ruling made by the Karnataka High Court, which held that ISKCON Society, Mumbai, was the owner of the property and restored the trial court rulings.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Bangalore came into existence under the ambit of the Karnataka Societies Registration Act in July 1978.
The society also purchased six acres of land from the Bangalore Development Authority at Hare Krishna Hills on 3 August 1988.
Later, it constructed an ISKCON Temple as well as a centre for cultural activities with funds obtained as donations from devotees.
Srila Prabhupada founded the ISKCON Society in Mumbai in 1966 under the provisions of the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.
The society has offices at Hare Krishna Land, Juhu, Mumbai. ISKCON Society Mumbai contended that ISKCON Bangalore was a branch and came under the jurisdiction of the former.
This was opposed by ISKCON Bangalore, which stated that it was formed under the Society Act and was an independent entity.
It also stated that ISKCON Society Mumbai had no authority over the working of the society, removing the office bearers of the society, or its administration.
The case first came up for hearing in the trial court, which later ruled that the Bangalore-registered society was the total and legitimate owner of the temple property at Hare Krishna Hills, Rajajinagar, Bangalore.
The court also turned down an appeal by ISKCON Mumbai seeking a permanent embargo against the Bangalore society.
An appeal was filed by ISKCON Mumbai in May 2011 in the Karnataka High Court challenging the ruling of the trial court in favour of ISKCON Bangalore.
Later, the High Court set aside the ruling of the trial court and concluded that the Bangalore society was a branch of the Mumbai society.
The case then went to the Supreme Court, which held that ISKCON Bangalore is the sole owner of the ISKCON Temple at Hare Krishna Hills and restored an earlier decree by the trial court.
It also set aside the Karnataka High Court decision and ruled that the Hare Krishna Temple in Bangalore belongs to the ISKCON Society Bangalore.
