BBMP’s Rs 2.28 Cr Plan to Feed Stray Dogs Chicken Rice Sparks Debate, Laughter, and Criticism

‘Every dog has its day’ goes the adage, and this is bearing fruit in Bangalore, where the civic body is planning to launch a stray dog feeding project worth Rs 2.28 crores.

The scheme envisages feeding stray dogs in the metro with 367 grams of chicken rice. The scheme intends to feed 5000 stray dogs daily, and for this endeavour, the civic body has invited tenders from FSSAI-registered catering services.

The contract will be awarded to the lowest bidder. The caterers will have to maintain high standards of hygiene and bear all the expenses of electricity and water for the kitchens where the food will be prepared.

However, the move has led to many questioning the rationale of feeding stray dogs in the open and letting them wander across the city.

Tamil Nadu Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has termed the move as a big health hazard and stated that it would have been better if the money was spent in building shelters for the stray animals where they would be fed, vaccinated and sterilised to keep the population of stray animals under control.

He also stated that India has the highest number of stray dogs in the world, and the number of rabies-related deaths is also one of the highest in the world.

Earlier, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram had also met PM Narendra Modi to highlight the danger to the lives of ordinary citizens posed by stray animals.

Mr. Chidambaram also lamented the fact that despite the passage of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, it has been seldom implemented.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) project to feed 5,000 street dogs across the city has been christened ‘Kukkir Tihar’, and the cost per meal per dog will be about Rs 22 daily.

It has been dubbed a public participation campaign and seeks to instil a feeling of responsibility in the public regarding the care of stray animals.

The scheme also aims to reduce aggression in stray dogs caused by hunger by providing them with access to a full and nourishing meal.

However, the move has evoked reactions from the netizens on social media, some of which is hilarious.

One user reminisces about how crooks cooked dog meat and served it to the gullible people as chicken, and in an ironic turn of events, dogs are now being fed chicken.

Another user in his flights of imagination visualised a stray dog relaxing in a Jacuzzi after a sumptuous meal of chicken and rice.

A third user wondered if stray dogs across the country are migrating to Bangalore after hearing that stray dogs are being fed chicken and rice in the city.
