Bangalore Commercial Tax Inspector and Associate Caught in Rs 20 Lakh Bribery Scandal
The Commercial Tax Inspector and his associate were caught red-handed accepting a bribe.
Nijanandamurthy was arrested and charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
His accomplice, Manoj M, was accepting the bribe at a hotel near Nagarabhavi.
The Karnataka Lokayukta arrested Nijanandamurthy, and his house was also raided, with more proof of his corrupt activities unearthed.
Investigations also revealed that the Commercial Tax Inspectors in Bangalore had even fixed a monthly sum from companies in other states for illegally sending goods into the city.
Commercial Tax Inspector Nijanandamurthy and his associate Manoj M were demanding a bribe of Rs 20 lakhs from a Pan Masala company based in Delhi.
The corrupt Inspector, along with his associates, would then facilitate the goods to escape legal scrutiny.
The Lokayukta officials also stated that these corrupt business deals led to hefty losses for the state exchequer.
The Lokayukta was receiving intelligence about the corrupt practices being carried out by the Inspector, and they set a trap.
The trap led to the arrest of Manoj M, and later, when Nijanandamurthy’s involvement was confirmed, he was also taken into custody.
A senior Lokayukta police officer said that the group was also demanding bribes from companies based outside the state, and there is suspicion that more officers could be involved in the racket.
The police investigation is proceeding against the corrupt officials, as well as the companies’ participation in the matter.
